An Analysis of social-emotional factors and progress in Game Play therapy for an abused child

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of game play therapy on an 8-year-old victim who had been mistreated by her biological mother since birth. The subject exhibited PTSD symptoms including anxiety, repressed anger, difficulties with emotional expression and control, dependency, poor attention skills, Tic symptoms and peer relational problems. The study was conducted over a total of 33 sessions for 10 months. To verify the effects of play therapy, the study analyzed the game categories and attitudes and social-emotional factors of fine motor games as suggested by Bow & Quinnell(2001). This was because the subject exhibited the characteristics of a child in the latency period; therefore the subject mainly selected board games. Additionally, to investigate any changes in the main symptoms, the study analyzed the play process evaluation progress as suggested by Ray(2010). The results showed that, there are changes to the main symptoms related to both emotional cognition and expression. Additionally, in terms of emotional control and efficacy, there was an increase in competency and decreases in her problems with attention. Peer relationships improved, and there was a decrease in got Tic symptoms. The significance of this research was that it sought to investigate the great variations seen in the play therapy process. It was significant in that it verified the application of play therapy methodologies using board games with children effected by the latency effects of PTSD symptoms, and that it led to an alleviation of the impact of mistreatment on such children.
